Acrodermatitis Enteropathica Information
Acrodermatitis Enteropathica occurs in two forms: an inborn (congenital) form and an acquired form.
Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by periorificial and acral dermatitis, alopecia, and diarrhea.
Acrodermatitis enteropathica is due to malabsorption of zinc through the intestinal cells.
Acrodermatitis enteropathica is lethal, usually within the first few years of life, if left untreated. However, Graves et al reported an untreated adult survivor.
Acrodermatitis Enteropathica Symptoms

- Skin inflammation with pimples (pustular dermatitis) occurs around the mouth and/or anus, the nails (paronychial), and eyes.

Treatment of Acrodermatitis enteropathica
- Treatment of Acrodermatitis enteropathica involves greater than 1-2 mg/kg of oral zinc supplementation per day for life.
- No special diet is necessary as long as zinc supplementation is continued.
- No activity restrictions are necessary.
